Album Review: "I Will Praise You" by Rebecca St. James

Rating: 4/5 Stars
Genre: Praise and Worship/Adult Contemporary

After a full six years of hiatus from album releases, Rebecca St. James finally returns with a new album and as an engaged woman! The announcement of the new album was almost as exciting as the announcement of her engagement. In I Will Praise You, Rebecca returns to the Praise and Worship style of her earlier album Worship God, arguably her most successful album to date. This time, however, most of the songs on the album are written by her and longtime fans of Rebecca may notice that her voice seems to have matured as well. But the real question is, after so many years away from song writing, will Rebecca St. James be able to show that she has not lost her skills and succeed in giving us another great album? That question I asked myself and will now answer in my review of I Will Praise by Rebecca St. James.

The album starts off with the title track "I Will Praise You" in which Rebecca St. James expresses her strong desire to praise God. She sings in the chorus, "Whatever the storm, whatever is lost, whatever it takes, whatever the cost, I will praise You!" The second track is Rebecca's own cover of the popular worship song "You Never Let Go" written by Matt Redman. I think she does a great job

Song/Video of the Week: "Background" by Lecrae

This song's music video by Lecrae was nominated for a Dove Award! "Background" is from the album Rehab and features C-Lite in the chorus. I really like this song because the lyrics are all about Lecrae expressing his humility and letting God take front-stage and all the glory while he "plays the background." This is something we all should be saying and doing, and this song reminds us of that. Enjoy, and be sure to check out the album Rehab! You can read my review of the album here.

Reviews coming soon!

Hey everyone! I'm really sorry for the long delay from writing new reviews. I have been pretty busy lately as college finals approach, but I plan to begin writing more review in the coming weeks, so stay tuned! Bible Verse of the Week: Easter Special-Luke 18:31b-33

In celebration of Easter, this week's Bible verse is Easter-related. Jesselyn will give us a short devotional to go with the verse and I will give a special closing at the end, something that I will only do for special occasions. All other times, it will be just a devotional.

"...Everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled. He will be handed over to the Gentiles. They will mock Him, insult Him, spit on Him, flog Him, and kill Him. On the third day, He will rise again." Luke 18:31b-33
In this passage, Jesus predicted for the second time to His disciples that He would be betrayed to the chief priests and teachers of law who would condemn Him. The Gentiles would then crucify Him, but He would be raised to life on the third day. However, the disciples did not understand what Jesus meant. I used to wonder, since He knows everything, why would Jesus predict His death twice knowing that His disciples would not understand Him? In Acts, it is stated that the disciples remembered these words that Jesus spoke after He was resurrected from the dead. All of them, Peter especially, became greatly strengthened in their faith because everything that Jesus and the prophets predicted came true. Both predictions were necessary for the disciples to build their personal faith in God. Their minds referred back to these very words, and they believed. Hopefully, we can remember His crucifixion and resurrection for us Gentiles who put Him on that cross and believe too.

I would like to first thank Jesselyn for providing the verse and a short devotional. Before closing, I want to first comment on something I find worth talking about concerning the crucifixion of Jesus. I think that sometimes we do not think of how hard it really was for Jesus to do that for us. Crucifixion is probably the worst death that you can die, because it lasts for so long. The Bible says that Jesus hung on the cross for three full hours. How painful and torturous that must have been! Not only do you have thick nails hammered into your hands and feet, but gravity is pulling you down on them. Do not forget that Jesus was also whipped and beaten before the crucifixion, and He was also forced to carry His own cross up the hill where they would crucify Him. Finally, all the pain Jesus went through was not the worst thing that happened to Him. The moment all the sins were upon Jesus, the Father left His Son, which is why Christ says "My God, why have You forsaken me?" None of us has experienced God leaving us, but Christ did. As we celebrate Easter, I encourage you to remember how much Christ really went through for us. He showed us His ultimate love by dying for our sins so that one day, we may live with Him.

Announcement concerning the Weekly Bible Verse!

I want to let you all know that my sister Jesselyn will be giving me a verse every week for the Weekly Bible Verse which can be viewed on the sidebar of this blog. Jesselyn really loves to read the Bible and loves to memorize special verses too. She's definitely better at that than I am, so it is fitting that she takes over the verse section. Also, I will be starting a weekly devotional post for each verse. The plan is that Jesselyn or I will write up a short devotional related to whatever verse is chosen for that week. I plan to start it soon, so stay tuned! For now, I would appreciate it if you would welcome my sister Jesselyn to the blog!

Just for Fun: Music Tag Game

My friend Jay tagged me in this game he did on his blog and I'm going to do it as well and I hope you join me. To play, write down ten bands that come to mind. Don't read the questions below yet until you have written these down or you will just spoil the fun.

Anyway, here are the ten bands I came up with and here are the questions and answers:
1. Newsboys
2. Skillet
3. Tobymac
4. Building 429
5. FM Static
6. Natalie Grant
7. Britt Nicole
8. Chris Tomlin
9. Jeremy Camp
10. Switchfoot

Q1. What was the first song that you ever heard by number six? (Natalie Grant)
I think it was Held. That's also one of my favorites from her.

Q2. What is your favorite song by number eight? (Chris Tomlin)
Probably "How Great Is Our God." It's one of my favorite worship songs and I really like it.

Q3. What kind of impact has number one had on your life? (Newsboys)
Newsboys's songs are ones that many times I can relate to. I like the band's story as well, coming from Australia and trying to fit in here in America. Now, they are one of the biggest Christian bands in the country and maybe even the world!

Q4. What is your favorite lyric by number five? (FM Static)
"I'll do my best, don't get upset. Sometimes my brain says no, but my heart says yes." That's the first line and chorus from the title track of FM Static's new album My Brain Says Stop, But My Heart Says Go.

Q5. How many times have you seen number four in concert? (Building 429)
I have never seen them, though they did come to Pittsburgh once, but I was unfortunately unable to go. However, I plan to go to one of their concerts sometime.

Q6. What is your favorite song by number seven? (Britt Nicole)
"The Lost Get Found" which was a hit on radio and one that I just had to download for myself!

Q7. Is there any song by number three that makes you sad? (tobyMac)
No, I don't think so. I always seem to get happy, not sad, when listening to Toby's songs. :D

Q8. What is your favorite song by number nine? (Jeremy Camp)
I'd have to say "Lay Down My Pride" which has a great beat and great lyrics!

Q9. How did you first discover number two? (Skillet)
A friend of mine from Virginia send me a link to the band's "Monster" video on Thanksgiving of 2009. So, I'm a new fan of the band, but they quickly became one of my favorites!

Q10. How did you first discover number three? (tobyMac)
I first heard his song "Gone" on the radio and I really liked it. After that, my brother got one of Toby's albums and I got to know more of his music.

Q11. What is your favorite song by number four? (Building 429)
I really like the song "Always" because of the story behind it and the message they send through the song.

Q12. Is there a song by number eight that makes you sad? (Chris Tomlin)
Not really, though a lot of his songs have much emotion in them, but I've never been made sad by listening to them.

Q13. How many times have you seen number six live? (Natalie Grant)
I think it would be really cool to see Natalie Grant live, and she did come to Pittsburgh once with Britt Nicole and another artist, but I was again unable to go, but I hope to see her live one day as she is my favorite female singer.

Q14. What is your favorite song by number one? (Newsboys)
Definitely "Breakfast" which I am sure is probably most Newsboys fans' favorite as well! This song is so catchy and is off the band's best album ever Take Me To Your Leader!

Q15. How did you become a fan of number ten? (Switchfoot)
During the first year of when I began to listen to Christian music on the radio, I heard Switchfoot's songs "This Is Your Life" and "Dare You To Move", both of which I really liked. After listening to the full Learning to Breathe album, I became a true fan of the band!

So those are my answers to the questions. This is supposed to be a tag, so I'll tag the following people. If you are tagged, please reply to this post and let me know your answers to these questions. Either comment on this page or write up a post of your own on a blog or create a note on Facebook and send me the link in a comment! :)

Song/Video of the Week: "Hanging on by a Thread" by The Letter Black

For this week's song/video, I'll not only give you the song but I'll let you know where you can download that song for free! That's right, free! "Hanging on by a Thread" by The Letter Black is a great rock song by a great band. In fact, the band once toured with Skillet during the beginning of its career and their song "Believe" (which is another song that I highly recommend you check out) featured strings arrangements similar to Skillet's. As for the free download of "Hanging on by a Thread", you can download it off the AOL radio blog website here. Just click the blue words "Download: 'Hanging on by a Thread' (MP3)" and you're on your way. You will, however, need a flash player plug-in to view the song well. Then just right click on the player and select "Save video as" from the drop-down menu!

Artist Alert: Jonathan Salas no longer Skillet guitarist

Ok, so I told all of you that Jonathan Salas had been chosen as the new guitarist for Skillet. However, as of April 9, he is no longer with the band. He has already quit touring with the band and Ben is filling in again as guitarist while training a new guitarist who is yet to be announced. Jonathan said on twitter that he "had fun, just didnt work out." One reason may be that he did not like touring in the Avalanche Tour with secular bands, which is currently still going on, but whatever the reason, Ben is now guitarist again until April 17 or until further notice!

Song/Video of the Week: "Avalanche" by Manafest

Here's a great rap/rock song by the Canadian rapper Manafest! I had a lot of trouble trying to think of a good song to use as this week's song/video, so big thanks to Jay at Jay's Musik Blog for suggesting this song to me! :)
