Album Review: "The Revolution" by Lil Prophet

Label: Real Word Records
Release Date: June 26, 2012
Genre: Hip Hop
Rating: 4/5 stars

Lil Prophet, born Ryan Kelsie, is a young, 24-year-old hip-hop artist from Tampa, Florida.  With a degree in Biblical Studies, Lil Prophet’s mission is to preach the gospel through his music.  His new release, The Revolution, focuses on the topic of us Christians truly making a difference in our lives.  Lil Prophet describes a “revolution” as being the “daily renewing of your mind and spirit….  This album will challenge the believer to come to grips with their daily actions and thoughts.”

“Welcome You In” opens The Revolution with Lil Prophet rapping about having to “revolutionize” from his old ways and become new in Jesus.  The track has a great beat and serves as a solid opening to the album.  This is followed by “New Changed” in which Mehlek Pfisha joins Lil Prophet in talking about Christ’s sacrifice as well as the change in their lives.  “I’m changed / Said I don’t do them things I used to do my mind has been renewed.”

Lil Prophet gets very serious and deep in “Brainwashed” where he raps about the brainwashing we receive from the media.  He reminds us to follow God, not the influences that surround us.  The topic of “Fatherhood” is quite convicting as Lil Prophet tells men to support their families and help raise their children.  Furthermore, men are to love

Song/Video of the Week: "Oooo Weee" by Relikis

This week's song/video comes from hip-hop artist Relikis who is with Shamrock Media Group. I wrote an album review on Relikis' latest album I Am Relikis for Hype Radio Network. "Oooo Weee" is the opening track, and I called it "a solid opening for the album." Relikis states in the song, "I only need that One on my team" and that his mission as a rapper is for God. Here is the brand new video for the song:

Bible Verse of the Week: The Son of Man Came To Serve

"The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many." -Matthew 20:28

I consider this verse to be spiritually inspirational. The majority of us have a natural desire to be great. This verse points out that even Christ Himself came to serve us instead of what seemingly should have been vice-versa. Contemplate on this: Jesus, as worthy and mighty as He is, did not enter earth or heal others with grandiose pomp. Instead, He came and traveled humbly, never carrying Himself with higher importance than those around Him. Additionally, He gave His life for sinners and those who despised Him. If we are to be imitators of Christ, as is commanded of us, we must at least practice humility by serving others as Jesus served us whom were undeserved of that grace. ~Jesselyn

Album Review: "Church Clothes" by Lecrae

Release Date: May 10, 2012
Genre: Hip-Hop
Rating: 5/5 Stars

Grammy-nominated and dove award winning hip-hop artist Lecrae is back with a free mixtape directed mainly towards mainstream audience. Lecrae wants to use this mixtape to let new fans know more about him without having to buy an album. The meaning of the title of Church Clothes is that God takes us as we are; we do not need to “fix ourselves up” to make ourselves worthy enough for him. Though the mixtape may be directed towards nonbelievers, Christian fans will still find much substance in the lyrics of these songs.

Church Clothes begins strongly with the anthem-style “Co-Sign” which gives the listener an idea of what the mixtape is all about. Lecrae lets us all know that while his music is Christian, it is still hip-hop: “Hi, Hip-Hop / Don’t act like you don’t know me / We got the same momma / Don’t you try to disown me!” This’l makes a guest appearance on “APB,” the title of the song referring to the police’s APB broadcast containing information about wanted people. Lecrae uses this to represent that his life has changed so much that those who knew his old self are putting out an APB to find the “old Lecrae.” The title track on

Song/Video of the Week: "Let Go (ft. DecembeRadio)" by FLAME

Bible Verse of the Week: Humility and Submission

"That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." -Philippians 2:10-11

This verse is centered on humility and submission. The passage that this verse is taken from teaches that we have an attitude like Christ. Jesus said in Matthew 11:29, "Learn from Me...I am humble in heart." The physical act of bowing displays humbleness; doing it unto God is acknowledging and accepting His power and greatness. In Psalm 95:6, David urges, "Come...let us kneel before the LORD our Maker." Indeed, as stated in the verse, all will bow and confess that Jesus in Lord. Note that the verse does not say that all will have truly believed in Christ; it only says that all will humbly admit that Christ is Lord. For now, I encourage you to keep your heart forever humble and submissive before God that you may be a true imitator of Christ. ~Jesselyn
